J Mark Fullmer grew up in Southern California in the 1990s. He read extensively as a child, acted in a local children's theatre group, played Little League baseball, NJB basketball, and was a boy scout. Mark picked up the trumpet at age 10, as part of the school district's music program. Two years later he began studying with David Washburn, principal trumpet of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra. In high school he was active in the music program, took special pleasure in studying Latin, ran cross country and track (even anchoring the winning 1600-meter relay team in the 1996 All-City Track meet). His senior year Mark won the principal trumpet seat in the Orange County Youth Symphony Orchestra. A National Merit Scholar, he attended USC on the school's Presidential Scholarship and studied trumpet under Boyd Hood of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. After graduating in 2002 Mark worked briefly as a construction superintendent; he spent his free hours making his own research exegesis of the author Philip K. Dick at the Cal State Fullerton Special Collections archive. The following fall he shipped off to England to spend six months working and conducting individual research in Oxford. 2004 finds Mark back in Southern California, working as a Title I tutor for the Orange County Department of Education. He also is office manager for a small construction company and on the weekends moonlights as a hotel night watchman. What's Next?
