The Little Orphan Girl (Original)

I once had a long and drunken conversation about authenticity in music as the end of my grad school days neared in which I found myself defending the idea that real music, real emotion, comes best without ornament or polish. I've since wobbled between a more tempered view of authenticity, in part because my limited musicianship (compounded by my feeble perfectionism) makes it hard to do one-takes. On top of this, I do feel that "producing" music enables some pretty cool creative progress that can't be done in one shot. In any case, this take of "The Little Orphan Girl," (which I first heard performed by Doc Watson, which he first heard sung by his grandmother) to me, is sickishly authentic.

I never heard it again for about 10 years, but the song made such an impact on me I was able to remember and look up the lyrics today. This is the saddest song I have ever heard - it made me cry 10 years ago and it made me cry today."
