Only Yours

Ever had one of those afternoons where everything's zinging, the wind is blowing in your hair & all the rest, and then all of a sudden you step into a largish pile of elephant dung?

Well, last week I had one of those afternoons, came home, went straight to my room--without supper. Mopey and dopey, I started thumbing through the music on my computer and ran across a song by a former student of mine, Bella, a religious tune she'd composed and recorded in 2008. Quickly and quietly I found myself being soothed like Saul. To make a short story really short, I suddenly found myself hooking up my microphone and humming, fiddling around with half-baked harmonies, ambling through fragmented melodies on the flugelhorn. I recorded the voices that night and added the trumpet parts the following morning.

Listening to what I added now, I feel slightly like Phil Spector mangling the Let it Be album, because after all, Bella's voice is so beautyfull and meaningfull on its haunting lonesome. But it's also my feeble way of paying homage to her grace.
